Anyone who lives in an area that is prone to flooding or has a history of storms and hurricanes needs to prepare themselves by learning about water damage restoration. It’s not an easy job cleaning up after a disaster. Perhaps most importantly is drying the house as early as you can so that you are at less risk for bacteria and mold to burgeon. You also need to be aware of the diseases you or your family may be at risk for after flooding, and research how these can be treated. If you find out about these risks ahead of time, you’ll be better prepared to handle them if you ever need to.
You can help make restoration easier by buying a number of household appliances well in advance of flooding. Some items that should be kept in your house include vapor steam cleaners, low temperature dehumidifiers, air purifiers and air sterilizers. Purchase these early on and you’ll be ready to protect your house and family against bacteria and mold by drying the walls, furniture and floors with these machines.
You’ll also want to make sure you keep a number of masks at home. You can clean the sewage out with water but it’s important to wear a mask. In fact, any time you are cleaning up after a flood, wearing a mask is always a good idea.
If you are about to start cleaning up after water damage, find out first if the house has standing water inside. If it does, you’ll want to be wearing boots and rubber gloves. Don’t go in if the structure seems unstable. As for electricity, it should be turned off with the main switch and try to keep any electrical wires dry.
When you start cleaning, make sure you don’t keep anything that’s been damaged such as old rugs and books. You’ll want to clean and dry the floors, cabinets and basement. Wet areas can be dried with a low temperature dehumidifier, and the vapor steam cleaner should be used to disinfect the whole house.
Plumbing and electrical systems typically need to be repaired by specialized technicians, so be sure to check and see if they need to be repaired. If they do, call professionals to come out and repair these systems as soon as possible. Wood is especially prone to mold infestation so it should be properly cleaned right away or discarded.
Health risks include pneumonia, influenza and tuberculosis. The threat of such infections should be taken very seriously and these diseases can spread very quickly, so it’s important to know about them in advance. It’s a good idea to research treatment for these diseases before you encounter a flood.
Contaminated drinking water is also a serious threat that often follows floods. It’s best to either filter your drinking water with a water purification system or boil it. All dishes should be cleaned in hot water and dried thoroughly.
If you are in an area that has a history of flooding, it’s a good idea to get flood insurance. Also if you’re able to look into restoration after flooding, and purchase the appliances and equipment that are useful for clean up and safety, you will be more ready to handle flooding if it comes.
