During the festive season there can be no better place to visit than the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. As a Christmas holiday vacation spot it is perfect for the whole family, and beats heading off to some far flung exotic location to get a winter tan.

During the festive season the Smoky Mountains take on a whole new complexion as it portrays all year round. During the year it remains a popular spot, but during the winter season it begins to come to life. The lights begin to sparkle all over, shops, restaurants, hotels emanate gorgeous colours, and the sound of carols begin echo throughout the town.

Depending on what you want to do and who you’re with there are a number of attractions to keep you busy however long you stay. For the more active, the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort offers all the customary snow and winter sports, whilst those looking for scenic beauty and some mesmerising walks need look no further than the gorgeous peaks themselves.

However, a trip to the Smoky Mountains is never complete without a visit up into the hills and woods for trekking and other outdoor activities. The beauty of the place with all the snow and glistening ice needs to be seen to be believed.

On the mountains themselves, the most beautiful sight can be seen on a clear day atop Clingmans Dome. At 6643 feet, its the tallest peak in the state and offers stunning views from the observation deck across seven different states. Have your camera at the ready to dazzle your loved ones when you get back home.

Other attractions include the Dollywood theme park with a multitude of rides and action as well as the Space Needle with it observation deck and arcade zone at the bottom for the teenagers in the family.

To top off the trip, a day out to the Christmas palace is a must. Seeing Santa sing melodies to a group of bewildered children truly sums up the Christmas spirit, whilst taking a wander around the grounds will cause even the most anti Christmas campaigner to smile in a childlike way. For anyone who calls themselves a fan of Christmas and the traditional cheer it brings, this is one that should be right atop your list. Unless you were to head out to the North Pole and find yourself upon Santa’s grotto itself, there truly is not a better place to suck in all the festive goodness of the season.
